S o this is the oldest Bordeaux wine that I have ever drank. Bought this wine from Altaya Wines in Hong Kong. This is also, perhaps the sweetest Bordeaux wine that I have ever had and in a way, reminded me of something from California given the fruit sweetness rather than from Bordeaux. Sweet saddled leather, currant, tobacco, Chinese medicine and mint aroma. The wine was soft, gentle and very pretty. An alluring aroma, but perhaps a tad too much. I thought the wine felt quaint, a bit funny given how Bordeaux wines are the farthest thing from quaint when they are young. Sweet on the palate with dusty herbs, tobacco, leather and espresso, again, with a rather sweet, pretty and quaint characteristics. A hint of mint at the finish with red currant. In addition to being the sweetest red Bordeaux that I have ever had, this was probably also the quaintest one that I have had. Granted, I have not had much experience with old Bordeaux wines that are more than 30 years in age (or wines in general that are more than 30 years in age), but as compare to the Château Margaux Margaux 1978 that I had, this was quaint. A good wine that does not blow me away, but is pretty and easy to drink and better than most stuff that are out there (I could do without the high prices though).
I think Charlene had a perfect description of how we felt about this wine. She thought the wine reminded us of a well-groomed woman with a sweet and high temperament. When you meet her for the first time, you thought she will be an interesting person to talk to and someone you may want to have a relationship with. However, as you start to engage in conversation with you, you realized that she doesn’t have that much to say and is kind of boring. Despite her excellent upbringing and other positive qualities, she just lacked that magic that turns head. She does not have elegance, sexiness, sensuality, body or looks, and she is also without depth or a mysterious side to her that will hold our interest. In a way, she is a bit shallow. After saying good bye to her, we will probably not remember much about her anymore. It must be noted, however, the wine did undergo some transformation from when we first opened the bottle through to about 2 hours thereafter. The wine had a higher tobacco and leather like aroma and flavor profile at the beginning which evolved to a sweeter profile as time passed.
